Where were Meade and Lee?
When the opening shots of Gettysburg were fired, Generals Meade and Lee, the army commanders who between them controlled more than 170,000 officers and men, were each more than a dozen miles away. Lee on his horse Traveler rode with General "Old Pete" Longstreet in the midst of foot soldiers along the Chambersburg Pike toward the eastern exit from South Mountain at Cashtown, about 8 miles to the west.

Meade, who was just given command of The Army of the Potomac on June 28, remained at Taneytown, Maryland where he had established his headquarters in the belief that he would probably fight a defensive battle along the high ground above Big Pipe Creek, 12 miles southeast of Gettysburg and just across the Maryland state line.
